Winter is back!

Searching for clues on the Kitzsteinhorn

by Marius Schwager 09/18/2012
Winter 2012/2013 in the Alps was heralded by a brief "hello awake"snowfall interlude. Not only the PG readership was already (at least partially) eager for the first snow, but the PG team also resumed its winter work.

With a brief "hello awake"-snowfall interlude, the winter of 2012/2013 was heralded in the Alps. Not only the PG readership was already (at least partially) eager for the first snow, but the PG team is also resuming its winter work.

You wouldn't believe your eyes, but at the beginning of September it had already snowed three times in the high-altitude parts of the Alps. The glacier ski resorts are all expecting the season to start on time. This means that almost nothing stands in the way of successful (and therefore often overcrowded) opening weekends. Some particularly motivated skiers have already made their first tracks in the first snow of the 2012/2013 season - more on this in the text below.

The PG editorial team is currently working hard to prepare for the new season. In addition to a new freeride book (to be published at the beginning of November), there will be some detailed improvements to the website. Editorially, too, the summer dust is gradually being shaken off. The computer keyboards and mice will be back on duty and the weather service will probably be online again by October 1st (depending on the weather and snow conditions). The full manpower will then be available to you again from October 15 at the latest.

Excursus: The particularly motivated PG reader

However, it was during the snowfall on 14.9.2012 that an old friend of the PG editorial team got in touch with an email from his summer slumber. His eagle eye spotted some ski tracks on a webcam on the freshly snow-covered glacier slopes on the Kitzsteinhorn. After a hasty Facebook message, two of the culprits were identified, along with plenty of amusing replies. User "chrisK" reported that the screenshot we had published was probably from his page and that he probably knew the trail blazer "Rene". "Rene" was probably also up on the Kitzsteinhorn that day, but the brazen tracker was someone else.

Less than two hours after the Facebook message, another message lit up our inbox: "David" claimed the tracks he had made for himself and was able to prove his claim with meaningful pictures. The PG editorial team takes its hat off to so much snow and freeride motivation and thanks him on behalf of all those laughing heartily with a wintry PG cap. With so much motivation, the coming winter can only be good!

"Dear PowderGuide Team!I want to claim the hat for myself! These are my tracks, hihi! That's how small the world is! It was an amazing day on the Kitz today! My most beautiful summer day!
