PowderAlert 11 2021/22 | Short and windy.

It just wasn't quite clear until Saturday whether Ullr would send us more than 30cm or not. That's why today only in brief. It will also be dangerous, so this alert is rather muted.

Alert period and areas

It's snowing similar amounts everywhere from France to the Rax. The alert lasts until tomorrow afternoon (Monday).

Wind

Massive storm again. Together with the often unstable snow cover, a really unfavorable combo. I would also stay below the tree line on Tuesday if it breaks up, or where it always gets chopped up. Full amounts tend to be from the north towards the main ridge or just beyond. Rather less in the foothills of the Alps.

Snow line

Not really ideal either, as it fluctuates greatly. First it goes up to a maximum of 1000-1200m in the east and up to 1300-1500m in France and then almost completely down again with the wind shift to the northwest. So you should rather go into higher trees to compensate for the fluctuations and not hit any crust.

The amounts

All over 25-50cm depending on local wind and congestion. Hardly any surprises.

Where to go

On Monday, into the trees and forest aisles because it's storming. On Tuesday it opens up, but if you've seen how many avalanches have occurred in the last few days, you should take it very, very easy, as everything is simply unstable.

Medium-term

The general weather situation with massive outbreaks of cold air near Newfoundland is pretty grumpy. It will warm up again from Wednesday onwards, before possibly getting a bit warmer again at the weekend, but probably below the alert level. A fundamental change to real winter with less wind and warmth is unfortunately not on the cards.
