Where is it snowing?

The alert areas are the whole of France up to the Arlberg in the north and the south-eastern Alps from eastern Italy via Carinthia to Slovenia. There are hardly any core zones in the north, but in Savoy and the lower Valais it is likely to be at the upper end, while the amounts of fresh snow on the Arlberg are more likely to be at the lower end. In the south, the area is quite small with a core in the Julian Alps.

Snow line

In the north and west, the snow line quickly drops below 1000m, so that the full amounts should come from 1000-1200m. In the southeast, it will remain relatively high for a long time, so that the full amounts will not arrive there until 1900-2100m.

Where should I go?

Well. There's not much to be had in the trees without a base. I would go to the mountain pastures on the northern slopes of the Swiss Alps on Sunday and then head higher up to the areas with a base from Monday. So rather not France and towards central Switzerland or north-eastern Switzerland.

There was nothing in the south-east and the snow line is very high. So maybe Monday on a glacier to ring in the season in comfort. Whether you can ski off-piste then is for others to judge.

Outlook

The next Powderbundesliga match day is probably coming up in the north on Thursday and Team Ullr is well positioned. More on this in the WeatherBlog or probably even here. We're keeping our fingers crossed for Team Ullr and hoping for a European or Champions League place this winter. It stays cold and wet. Woohoo!
