Freeride tour of the week | Col du Longet - Pic Travesier

Popular, not too difficult tour in the Queyras

by Stefan Neuhauser 01/25/2015
In the middle of the Parc Naturel de Queyras, the road leads over the Col d'Agnel from France to Italy. This third highest pass in the Alps is surprisingly little known, but although the road (which leads up to 2,744 m) is of course closed in winter, it offers many opportunities for ski tourers and freeriders.

Ascent

Start at the Pont de Lariane in the lower part of the Col d'Agnel, where there is a cleared parking lot for winter sports enthusiasts (P. 2,024 m, due to the winter closure and you cannot get any further).
Follow the cross-country ski trail on the right side of the stream in the direction of the ascent, then branch off to the right to point P. 2,156 m. From here ascend in a southerly direction. You cross a sparse larch forest, at approx. 2,200 m you change direction slightly to the east and roughly follow the Torrent du Longet (to the right of the stream) to the Col du Longet at 2,701 m. The terrain is more hilly and more structured than is initially apparent on the map. Be careful if the avalanche situation is tense! Especially when visibility is poor, it is impossible to recognize the small-scale terrain traps. From Col du Longet, head east, to the left of the ridge, into the upper summit basin. This then narrows to a ridge at approx. 2700 m, the walls of which drop off to the south and east (be careful here too in poor visibility). For the last few meters, follow the ridge to the summit with skis on your feet.
