Freeride tour of the week | Göll-Ostwand

Steep wall delicacies at the gates of Salzburg

by Christian Skala • 03/22/2015
A beautiful firn classic through an imposing wall. An undertaking not to be underestimated with an approach that is not easy to find. However, you will be rewarded with a sunrise and a wonderful descent with magnificent views of the distance and depths.

A beautiful firn classic through an imposing wall. An undertaking not to be underestimated with an approach that is not easy to find. However, you will be rewarded with a sunrise and a wonderful descent with magnificent views of the distance and depths.

Ascent

The ascent is divided into two parts, namely the approach to the Wilden Freithof via the Jägersteig and the ascent from there to the summit.
For the first part, head from the parking lot via a forest road to Eckersattel (1413 m). From there, walk approx. 100 m in the direction of Dürrfeichtenalm and then onto an old forest road that branches off to the south. Follow the old forest road until, after the first forest crossing, a small, barely recognizable path (climbing tracks) begins before the next forest section. A high seat, past which the Jägersteig leads, serves as a rough orientation. The climbing tracks get better and better during the ascent and you follow the trail to the Wilden Freithof. Beware of the risk of falling! The path runs partly through quite steep terrain with some stream crossings.
Once you reach the Wilden Freithof, the actual ascent begins. Ski up the wide cirque to a narrowing at the upper Wilden Freithof. From this point, use crampons to ascend the increasingly steep wall. After a final steep narrow section, you reach the summit cornice, which is usually quite mighty. Exit to the left of this. Then - again with skis strapped on - continue along the ridge to the summit.

Descent

The descent is the same as the ascent and therefore also the way back via the Jägersteig to the starting point of the tour.

Tip

It is certainly not a disadvantage to take a look at the route/entrance to the Jägersteig before the tour. It is not easy to find. Between April and May, when the Göll east face is at its best, the Jägersteig is more or less open. The approach is not recommended when there is snow! On our tour, we walked the Jägersteig with mountain boots.
