Ascent

From the starting point at the Valeriehaus, head north via a steeper south-facing ascent towards the Bockhartseehütte. In the first section, you can follow a road to the tunnel. The tunnel is normally closed in winter, so leave the road at this point at the latest and continue the ascent in open terrain. At the Bockhartseehütte hut, you are rewarded with a beautiful view of the reservoir before descending to the dam wall. The few downhill meters can also be skied well with skins, so skinning is not absolutely necessary. After crossing the dam wall, follow the south-western ridge to the summit of the Ortberg. A beautiful panorama with a perfect view towards the Hohe Tauern awaits you there.

Accommodation: Various accommodation options in Bad Gastein and Böckstein

How to get there: From the B311 into the Gastein Valley and continue on the B167 to Böckstein. From there, take the toll road "Gasteiner Alpenstraße" to Sportgastein. Parking is best at the Valeriehaus.
