Videos of the Week #5 2020/21 | This and that

Miscellaneous

by Lea Hartl 12/18/2020
Sebastian, the curator of the Videos of the Week, is unfortunately unable to make it this time, so Lea has come up with a few video recommendations at short notice. It's a pretty mixed selection, but that's the way it is when the substitute has to step in! We start with a lecture on behavioral economics and avalanches, then turn our attention to the snowpack, then back to the human factor and finally to the best (?) of all ascent aids.

What's economics got to do with it?

Andrea Mannberg is a behavioral economist at the University of Tromsø. At the virtual ISSW (VSSW), she gave a rather entertaining presentation on how "sunk cost fallacy" and "present bias" can be transferred to an avalanche context and why people sometimes simply ignore important information.

Snow slab on the Pirchkogel

The LWD Tirol has also recently started vlogging and shows us a snow slab and the associated, very unsightly snowpack structure. The avalanche was triggered by ski tourers on the descent, no one was injured.

Snow cover tests with the snow pusher

PG snow pusher Lukas Ruetz and Co. demonstrate the toxic snow cover build-up with a propagation saw test at another location in Sellrain. The sawed-out block of snow is thrown unerringly at the cameraman.

Solving for Z

Zahan Billimoria is a legendary ski guide in the Tetons, where he works a lot with film crews and travels with pros in the most challenging terrain. Solving for Z is a thought-provoking short film about the risks you take when you live like the protagonist. It lacks a final conclusion, but perhaps "Calculus of Risk" is a differential equation without an analytical solution and that's the way it has to be.

Salomon TV: The Chairlift

And finally, for a happy ending, a declaration of love to the chairlift as such.
