Sucks to suck

Conditionsupdate Japan

von Zach Paley 11.01.2016
There's a lot unsaid about returning home. As much as there is an allure to new adventures, being amongst good friends in familiar places has a therapeutic quality. And we need this therapy because the snow in Hakuba has been absolute shit. Except for a very small handful of moments in the alpine, Japow has yet to Japow this winter.

Judgment comes into question as one wonders how the weather could be so foul. Did I unintentionally kick the karma gods in the teeth last time I made turns? Have I not worked hard and sacrificed enough to make this winter a good one? What poor decisions have I made to awaken the wrath of Shiva himself? Donations to local shrines, sacrifices of young children and livestock, and attempts to "drink it snow" commence. So far, nothing has worked. Our Japow has been defenestrated. We ski vicariously through movies and reports from friends far away.

Japow or not, Japan still has its benefits of lifestyle and tranquility. Long soaks in local onsen and consumption of delicious cuisine help. If nothing else, astoundingly large, cheap, and tasty bottles of whisky keep the mind in a hazy void where worrying about the lack of snow doesn't happen. While it sucks to have snow falling everywhere we are not, it's great to see others getting it good. Within the second family, we have friends all over the world with similar passions who have put their time in and are enjoying strong winters. We need snow here like a teenage mom needs therapy, but aren't selfish enough that reports of winter elsewhere brings dismay to our hearts. While it may suck to suck, it is reassuring to know that snow will come. Maybe. I hope.
