Eric Pollard, probably one of the most creative and active freeskiing figures on the globe, has taken the fate of a film production into his own hands. He paints, films and has a rather unconventional view of things. His wife, Erin Valverde Pollard, a gifted graphic artist and camerawoman, supports him in his projects. The new Pollard film Contrast was recently released under the Nimbus Independent banner.
The Nimbus Crew is a group of like-minded people driven by friendship and family. The individuals shine both behind and in front of the camera. The film more than lives up to its title, although it is difficult to say whether the bonus material should not be treated on the same level. The contrast(s) between driver and camera angle on the one hand and the experiences in foreign countries (Slovakia, Japan, Austria) on the other are embedded in a wonderful composition of colors and tones. This somewhat different concept is certainly unusual but appealing. As in Hunting Yeti, this crew exudes good humor and fun. Those expecting only monster drops and extreme terrain will not get their money's worth. Nevertheless, you can still see skiing at its finest. You can even see Erin skiing down the slopes in the bonus material. The movie consists of four main parts: Past, Learning, Creativity and Adventures in Skiing Life. The main protagonists talk about their past and share their perspective on things. Under certain circumstances, the length of the interviews could be seen as the only "weak point" of the film. In each of these parts, Eric Pollard, Pep Fujas, Andy Mahre, Chris Benchetler, Blake Nyman and many friends show the best action.
Conclusion
This film is certainly one of the top films this year. With this movie, the Nimbus crew has taken a first big step that was a complete success. The only thing you shouldn't forget is that the bonus is also very good. The country trips in detail and a digression into surfing are just some of the highlights. Top Christmas present for anyone who wants to see more than just hard skiing action.
