PowderAlert 5 2020 /21 | New year, new südstau!

In case you're wondering why Alert 5 didn't come this morning: The Oracle was busy shredding the Gnar and scouting sick lines with the bros. Or something. uh. Well. Anyway. But it was really great and days like this keep the fire burning.

In any case, I was in the Black Forest, where ironically there is more snow than in the northern Alps, as the Black Forest benefits from a south-westerly flow. Surprisingly, it's been quite a cold south/southwest flow this year and the new alarm will be no exception. And all the inhabitants of the Southern Alps are confused because they discover that you can ski well in the forest below 1500m. But hey, who's going to complain?

Alert period and areas

From the Monte Viso massif to Slovenia. Cores are probably from Monte Rosa to Ticino and somewhere in the Dolomites.

The alert runs until Sunday evening.

Wind

It's getting crazier and crazier. Cold südstau with little wind and a solid base. Jackpot! But also hardly any snow spilling on or over the main ridge. Around 50% on the main ridge.

Snowfall limit

Somewhere between the very bottom and 800-1000m in the foothills of the Alps in the east with unfavorable inflow. So really good for südstau. Go and get the blower!

The amounts

From Monte Viso to Slovenia, 30-50cm of firm, cold powder. In the western core towards Monte Rosa it can be 50-80cm and in the eastern core 40-70cm.

There are no major surprises, it's short and doesn't accumulate too much.

Where should I go?

On the second and third of January, head to your favorite southern trees, which may be newer and deeper than last year. On the fourth it opens up and you can look for cold ullrgaben at the top. There may be cloud gaps here and there in the afternoon on the third and you can make sure you're where you can get higher quickly if necessary.

Mid-term

Cold trough central Europe with new little surprises, but nothing significant before the 8th/9th. But the conditions in the south are bomb and remain good. I'm happy about that, even if I can't go. Because as the wise Ullrprophet Shreddy McGnar from Scotland said: The stranger's stoke is your stoke too! Pow!
