At PowderGuide, Lea Hartl is primarily concerned with weather and snow. She also does this outdoors on the mountain and in her job as a scientist.

SLF: From 22/23 intermediate stages in the bulletin
Lea Hartl • 11/28/2022What experienced skiers could more or less reliably glean from the text of the bulletin is now put into concrete figures. From this season onwards, the SLF will use three intermediate levels for the avalanche danger levels moderate, considerable, large and very large. For level 3, for example, a 3, 3= or 3+ is given in addition to the "whole" level (3, considerable). 3- is closer to 2, 3= is "neutral" and 3+ is closer to 4. -

WeatherBlog 2 2022/23 | Stocktaking and outlook
Lea Hartl • 11/24/2022The WeatherBlog has not yet decided whether winter has really begun. But to be on the safe side, we'll give you a brief overview. At least visually, it's relatively wintry from about 1000m upwards. A north-westerly current will bring new, small disturbances and a few showers today (Thursday) until Saturday. Sunday looks very sunny, then it will become more changeable again. -

WeatherBlog 1 2022/23 | Snow in the south, then mild again
Lea Hartl • 11/03/2022We haven't really started the WeatherBlog season yet, but we'll take a quick look. The reason for this is winter, which is also popping in for a quick look, but then unfortunately turns around and goes back to sleep. It will snow heavily over the next few days, especially on the southern main ridge. There is less in the north, but here too the snow line is dropping towards 1000m. -

WeatherBlog 22 2021/22 | Spring fatigue
Lea Hartl • 04/20/2022Despite the relatively cold Easter days, we are taking big steps towards summer. The PowderGuide weather is also approaching the summer break and we will soon discontinue the usual weather service. If it does get wintry again, the WeatherBlog will report on a case-by-case basis. -

WeatherBlog 21 2021/22 | Easter: Bright to cloudy
Lea Hartl • 04/13/2022The forecast for the Easter weekend is still quite uncertain, but at the moment it looks like calm, rather cool weather. The current southerly flow (partly with Saharan dust again) is expected to end on Friday with a cold front. This will be followed by a north-easterly flow with cooler temperatures. -

WeatherBlog 20 2021/22 | April weather
Lea Hartl • 04/06/2022After the dry, dusty March, the unsettled April weather is a relief, at least according to the WeatherBlog. Finally something is happening again! In the last few days, with fresh snow and low temperatures, there has even been a real winter feeling, even if the base unfortunately leaves a lot to be desired. It will continue to be changeable and stormy until the weekend, then the weather should calm down. -

Gear of the Week | Kaiserschmarrn
Lea Hartl • 04/03/2022You come home after a ski tour, your clothes are damp, you're shivering and you jump into the shower. The question then quickly arises: What are we going to eat? -

WeatherBlog 19 2021/22 | Winter is returning
Lea Hartl • 03/30/2022Long awaited and now almost here: a real change in the weather with plummeting temperatures and snow in many valleys is just around the corner. Over the next few days, it will be deep winter again in the Alps -

World of Science | Avalanches and artificial intelligence
Lea Hartl • 03/28/2022Artificial intelligence and machine learning are the buzzwords of the moment in many areas and have been for the last few years. Corresponding techniques are also increasingly being used in snow and avalanche research. What exactly is AI, what are its concrete applications and what are the benefits? -

WeatherBlog 18 2021/22 | Boredom
Lea Hartl • 03/23/2022If it were in any way promising, the WeatherBlog would go on strike. But unfortunately, as we all know, you can't negotiate with the weather and so we remain trapped in the dry boredom of the concrete high, which is slowly but surely becoming a depressing monotony. On the crystal ball horizon there are signs, albeit still uncertain, of a late frost. -

WeatherBlog 17 2021/22 | Desert air
Lea Hartl • 03/16/2022The unclouded sunshine is history. Not because winter is making a sustained comeback, but because dust is being stirred up in the Sahara. In keeping with the current drought, we are being supplied with real desert air. A small disturbance is also moving through the north-east today and it is raining or snowing a little, but there are still no significant changes in sight. -

WeatherBlog 16 2021/22 | High pressure in a continuous loop
Lea Hartl • 03/09/2022An end to the high pressure phase is not in sight. The Omega High will merely shift a little, so that the flow will turn to a more southerly direction over the next few days. This will make it warmer and slightly foehn-like, at least in the west.
