Triebener Tauern: After all, the first time in the forest
Snow condition
Snow quality
Overall impression
Snow condition
At the moment, the general rule on the eastern edge of the Alps is: the further south you go, the better (= a little more snow). In the Triebener Tauern (or Hohentauern, which marks the pass between Trieben and Judenburg) it was definitely wintry, despite the low snow depth (around 20-30 cm at the pass, well over half a meter at the top at just under 1800m in a very shady location).
Snow quality
In shady areas 2-3 cm of surface frost due to the cold nights. Some fluffy fresh snow underneath. At the very top under these loose layers, a settled layer of old snow. Further down, the familiar mixture of snow, soil and plants.
Risks
Largely harmless (we looked a little in steep forest gullies up to 40 degrees). Most likely to be dangerous in snow-covered hollows and steep gullies above the tree line. But you can't get there at the moment anyway - unless you don't want to ski but want to climb a summit.
Overall impression
A little more snow than yesterday (for the first time it was possible to play in the forest or in nice forest gullies), and sunny weather (cloudless until the afternoon). Hence two stars. Even if skiing is still more of a game and we were surprised that you don't ruin your skis with so little snow in the high forest.
