Contemplative ski hike through the snowy landscape of the Kräuterin
Snow condition
Snow quality
Overall impression
Snow condition
Quite a lot of snow, especially from about 1000m (our starting point today was at 808m). The LWD station Bärnbachsattel, 1297m) on the east side of the Kräuterin currently shows approx. 210cm. The amount of snow in the forest is still very good (we came out of the forest at about 1180m onto a forest road).
Snow quality
The fresh snow from Thursday (approx. 20 cm in this area) is now damp due to the high temperatures. Further down, the snow cover is wet. A bit difficult to ride but not unpleasant. In view of the temperatures, we didn't have any great expectations. In any case, the crust of melted snow from the morning was quickly gone in the sun.
Risks
Relaxed, but wet snow slides, cornice breaks (sometimes very large cornices) and wet snow avalanches are now becoming more and more of an issue.
Overall impression
Beautiful day, very sunny at the beginning. In the afternoon, unfortunately, a high layer of clouds, which impaired visibility on the descent. Very beautiful scenery (deep snow-covered terrain, distant views of all the famous eastern Alpine peaks!) (made up for the initial "endless" forest road hike). Our descent variant (with a necessary counter ascent) also offered very beautiful slopes over open terrain and later meadow and forest slopes.
