Summer skiing on the Hochkar
Snow condition
Snow quality
Overall impression
Snow condition
Fantastic for mid-May, of course, and with good will you could also give it 4 stars. There's plenty of snow up to the parking lot and it will stay that way for a while, but below that it's practically green right away, and the slopes and terrain are absolutely easy to ski, some of the ridges are blown away and therefore already bare.
Snow quality
I had expected it to be worse, but the snow was quite ok, slightly frozen, so depending on the slope and exposure it was partly crushed snow and partly soft. However, as it was already heading towards summer snow at the low altitude of the Hochkar, you didn't get bogged down anywhere.
Risks
Due to the heavy snowfalls of the past few weeks, you should be careful on the steeper slopes. There have already been a few wet snow slides, but there will certainly be a few more, and please note that the closed slopes are not secured.
Overall impression
Great promotion by Hochkar, for those who haven't noticed, three lifts were opened today (they've actually been closed since the beginning of April) and skiing is free.
Of course, this attracts half of Lower Austria as well as a quarter of Vienna, so it was packed.
If anyone is going tomorrow, get there early, today it was really nice from 8:30 to 10, then it was just packed.
