Schlechter Schnee und Föhnsturm am Roten Stein
Snow condition
Snow quality
Overall impression
Snow condition
Continuous snow, but stones peek out from time to time, especially on the summit slope. A mixture of hard snow due to the rain below, covered with more and more snow blown in from about 1700m. There is little snow between the mountain pines, the scree is fine, but even there some large rocks peek through.
Snow quality
From bottom to top: hard snow or a (thick) layer of ice from the rain, from about 1900m broken snow and old tracks that have been blown over. There are old avalanche cones in the scree. Due to the foehn storm, larger and larger patches of drift snow have formed over the course of the day. The summit slope is quite blown out, but you can ski all the way down.
Risks
The connection between the fresh drifting snow and the snow cover underneath is relatively poor. The situation will get worse as the storm continues. Staying defensive is the method of choice...
Overall impression
The mixture of storm and bad snow made today's action less worthwhile. Personally, I'm happy about every day I can spend in the mountains, but today was borderline
