Snow report Ammer Mountains, 03/24/2016
Ski tour in the Ammergau mountains with surprisingly little rain (north; 800-1700m)
Snow condition

Overall impression
Snow condition
The amount of snow is not exactly great. There is usually not quite enough to start from the valley and so skis have to be carried in places. The southern sides are already snowed out up to summit level and the mountain pine belts are only partially snowed in. The snow line was around 1100 m above sea level at midday today. However, we encountered good snow above this level. There was about 3-5 cm of fresh snow on top of a stable layer of harsh snow. The effort of carrying skis was well worth it.
Snow quality
The snow quality naturally depended heavily on the altitude. Above the rain line, it was 3-5 cm, slightly wet powder snow on a load-bearing harsh surface and partly frozen old ski tracks. Below that, of course, the snow was also rather moderate. The 3-star rating refers to the snow above the rain line.
Risks
The situation is quite favorable. I didn't notice any major drifts at this altitude on the ridges. Only sliding snow and wet snow slides require attention.
Overall impression
As I had rather expected a short hike in the rain today, I was surprised by the good conditions.
