Snow report Andermatt / Gotthard, 01/09/2020
From Maighel to Vermigel in search of snow

Snow condition
The snow base is rich. There is now almost more at the bottom than at the top. Because today was another day with strong gusts of wind that stole snow, especially at altitude. Descents like the famous Cavradi look completely different to last year in April.
Snow quality
That's the point: the wind was everywhere. Yesterday it came from the north. Today it was blowing from the south. That makes snow sniffing very difficult. The Swiss locals are also having a hard time. The snow texture changes every 2 meters: with a lid, hard snow, blown in.
Risks
According to slf level 1 or level 2 for sliding snow avalanches. The large slides are clearly visible and are actually really big. Mostly ground avalanches. The piste in the ski area between Andermatt and Sedrun, which was hit by an avalanche 2 weeks ago, is probably always closed in the afternoon as a precautionary measure. Fish mouths are visible. Otherwise no new slides, not even overnight.
Overall impression
It's touring season. You don't go for the snow at the moment, but there are many other reasons: Sun, few people out and about, pushing your fitness, beautiful winter rooms, and really good fruit at the Maighels hut, which is already serviced.
