Snow condition
Quite all right for October. Especially in the +2500m regions, you can plow and hop through the terrain quite well on the north side. Below that, you have to ease off the throttle with every meter. Spring fever at the bottom.
Snow quality
Where there is no sun, well-set powder that piles up in the glacier bowl without much wind influence and invites you to play. South-west-facing expos have probably been in the sun for the last few days (since the last snowfall? The day before yesterday?) and had a crust of melt, but for the most part it was easy to ride. Slopes icy until midday.
Risks
The conditions at the top of the summit are already at the height of winter. The pre-summit of the Gemsstock was probably blown up and a slightly thick crack edge ran along the entire ridge (Expo South). There was also a crack next to the pre-summit couloir (Expo North). Difficult to assess, as the LLB still has very little data. Rising temperatures have affected the snow on the west side and snowballs the size of car tires rolled towards the valley and have accumulated to a decent amount of snow. You don't want to ride with the tires
Overall impression
After yesterday's day in Engelberg, we thought long and hard about whether Andermatt would work out. Biking instead of skiing in these temperatures almost seemed to make more sense to us. But the second beer took the decision out of our hands. One of the most relaxed days ever on the Gemsstock and with incredibly good conditions.
