Netter Tag in Kappl
Snow condition
Snow quality
Overall impression
Snow condition
At the top of the mountain, almost 1.50 meters base, decreasing significantly towards the valley, approx. 20 cm in Kappl itself. Above about 1800-2000 meters, depending on exposure and sunlight, we still found about 20-30 cm of fluffy snow. East-facing ridges were much more blown off (and the slopes had less snow) than west-facing ones.
Snow quality
As the day progressed, the snow became much heavier on the south and west sides, but in the morning there was pretty nice powder snow in all exposures above about 1800 m.
Risks
According to the LLB a 3! I don't trust the steeper east and north exposures above about 2000 meters in Tyrol this year. There are many weak layers in the snowpack structure. The accumulating ("floating") snow in particular is highly visible on the shaded side and will probably remain a danger throughout the winter!
Overall impression
The first real powder turns in Tyrol that I've been able to enjoy this year. In addition, the beautifully playful and varied terrain gave us a pretty good "stoke" yesterday.
