Snow condition
The last snowfall has finally created the first base. Above approx. 1800 m it should be enough (approx. 80 cm). The snow cover has already settled very well. The wind has been quite strong above the tree line. Below that, a föhn wind could melt a lot more. It was possible to ski down to about 1000 m today.
Snow quality
The icy temperatures have preserved the snow very well. There is fine, well-settled powder in all exposures on the shaded side. Very fine to ski. On the sunny side, the snow became much heavier below around 1800 m from midday. The tracked slopes were also fine to ski.
Risks
The fresh snow settled well despite the icy temperatures. Clear signs of wind were visible above approx. 2300 m. Several medium-sized snow slabs are clearly visible from a distance. Defensive behavior is advisable at these altitudes in very steep terrain. Below approx. 1800 m, a pronounced hoar frost can be seen. The crystals get bigger and bigger towards the valley.
Overall impression
Was a great start for off-piste today. It seems that other snow sports enthusiasts have also been waiting for this. Descents of over 1000 m were possible off-piste today without any major ascents. If it stays this calm, then it can go on like this.
