Exposition
Snow condition
Good snow conditions in the Kalkkögeln. Depending on the exposure, the crevasses are either blown away at the top (west) or well filled (east). A lot of snow has accumulated in the gullies, you need a lot of bad luck to make contact with rocks.
Snow quality
20cm of the finest powder snow, sometimes even a little more in gullies or on a soft base, it is fantastically deep. Despite the very low temperatures, the powder snow on the steep south side was already slightly damp from late morning. On the south-east side it should have held up, and on the east and north sides there will certainly still be great powder snow tomorrow. Be sure to check the measuring stations and snow maps, where the last snowfall was not enough, it is certainly a lot worse.
Risks
Wind intensity: Low (< 20 km/h)
Most of the fresh snow is completely unbound and lies on a stable layer of old snow. However, be careful in places where drift snow is deposited on this very loose powder. This is then probably very susceptible to disruption.
Overall impression
More fresh snow than expected has accumulated in many a gully in the Kalkkögeln. As a result, we used up all our energy reserves today and put together a varied combination of south- and north-facing gullies to create a beautiful tour.
