Snow condition
As I have often reported, it feels like there is a little less snow here compared to other areas. Snow stations don't show that. This is mainly due to the wind at higher altitudes, the snow walls next to the road are already quite large. But also the area in general. The Kalkkögel, which are the eastern foothills, have a little more. But overall it's very good and you can't complain. Many things that are usually only possible in spring can already be done now. Ski tours around the Juifenalm or on Sömen still looked pretty poor at the top.
Snow quality
There was no good powder snow, but rather sometimes better wind pressure and sometimes worse wind pressure. Rarely broken snow on the south side, but we were only on the south side around 3000m. Sometimes firn too. So everything was there and everything was influenced by the wind. Worked all the time over the days.
Risks
Relaxed at the time of our tours. Re-evaluate with the fresh snow, of course. Snow cover seemed very stable. From 1400m downwards, the upper 30cm were heavily degraded. Two fresh sliding snow avalanches of medium size had come down. This was our main focus and on very small-scale fresh drift snow with which you are more likely to fall and not get buried.
Overall impression
The normal classic touring areas also have interesting things to offer. Westfalenhaus is currently being prepared by hut landlord Rinaldo. Open now then. If you are planning the Schöntalspitze at the weekend, I would also think about the lower part. There you cross a few snow corridors in which large sliding snow avalanches could rush through. With better snow it would certainly have been 4 stars. In competition with the other days this season, however, only 3. Still good!
