Snow condition
The snow conditions are very dependent on exposure. Due to the strong south föhn, ridges and exposed slopes are blown away over very large areas (see photos). In the north-facing gullies and basins of the Kalkkögel, however, the snow conditions are good.
Snow quality
Still relatively good snow in the somewhat higher gullies. No longer super fluffy powder snow, but settled drift snow that is still relatively easy to ski. From around 2000m downwards, the snow becomes wetter and from around 1800m the snow is completely wet and slippery.
Risks
Due to the strong wind, you should watch out for drift snow. The only good thing about the relatively high temperatures is that the drift snow settles faster. There were hardly any snow plumes to be seen today as there is little really loose snow that can still be transported (up to max. 2400m!). Today's avalanche report warned of drifting snow above 2600m. So you should definitely be careful further up.
Overall impression
Skied 2 nice gullies in the Kalkkögeln in changeable snow conditions. Some of the snow was still good and the area was very scenic.
The ski area was supposed to open today, but due to the strong wind only a short tow truck was open at the valley station. So at least there were a few more meters of ascent than planned.
