Now that the passes are free of snow in many places, many tours can be started quite high up. From the Lac de Grand-Maison reservoir (picture 2), however, we carry 150m until the snow cover becomes continuous up to 1850m, on the shaded side.
Snow quality
It is relatively warm and when it is overcast at night (as in our case) nothing freezes even at 2500 m. The snow is very moist, but sometimes old and compact enough to make some nice turns. Skiable snow fields often have a brownish surface.
Risks
Lots of loose snow avalanches, some of which we triggered ourselves. A layer 5-10 cm deep comes off easily, but does not mobilize very large amounts of snow.
Overall impression
There is still plenty of snow in the Grandes Rousses, but the quality leaves a lot to be desired in order to get up when others come out of the disco.
