Snow condition

The snow conditions are outstanding right down into the valley. A reason for winter sports enthusiasts to rejoice, but the local snow clearing services have their work cut out clearing the roads and the snow load on the roofs is also very high.

Snow quality

We were in the north-facing forest and the snow there was still super powdery, sometimes covered with a thin layer of surface frost. The day before, we were on the south side, where the snow was damp due to the sunshine despite the very cold temperatures.

Risks

A few large sliding snow avalanches could be seen. Otherwise, large, already snow-covered avalanche cones of slab avalanches from steep terrain above the tree line. Above the tree line, there were some clear signs of wind in the snowpack. It is better to avoid steep terrain above the tree line, not only because of the drifting snow but also because, according to the LWD, there is also a problem with old snow. If this is snowed in, the conditions are once again not good.

Great days in Carinthia!
Due to the tense avalanche situation, the motto of the trip was "playful skiing" from the outset. So we were on the lookout for beautiful forest terrain, which at best had a few nice features to offer. The plan worked out perfectly and there was the perfect combination of excellent snow conditions, nice terrain, good powder snow and plenty of airtime. Due to a lack of accommodation options at the time, the adventure factor was increased by an overnight stay in a snow cave. There was no sign of the -20 degrees in the valley :)

Carinthia - we'll be back!
