Sunday walk in the Engelberg Valley
Snow condition
Snow quality
Overall impression
Snow condition
Snow fell from 1000m, fine thick flakes - just as it should be on a Sunday at the end of April. Skiable, i.e. with a base it was above 1350m. Definitely deeper than expected and fluffier than dreamed. 3 stars for end of season and low altitude - our playground didn't go higher than 1800 due to fog.
Snow quality
Here too: for the end of April - huareguet! Still cardboardy at the bottom, with meadow holes on the ascent, almost light to airy at the top - like a good Kaiserschmarrn. But only up to about 1550 m. There was certainly 30 cm of fresh snow and more at the top. Certainly in such a way that you would sink in about 20cm when making tracks and the use of your upper body was an advantage.
Risks
According to slf a 3. Even with daytime warming, we did not observe or trigger a slide. The snow was well bonded, no spontaneous slide. Rather a solid mass. Allows a classic spring tour start at 11.30!
Overall impression
As is so often the case, days when we are standing in the rain down below, among the broad color palette of spring greens and birds chirping happily to mate, are completely underrated. Setting off without expectations, being told on the phone that you'd better go for a swim - and then setting first lines in 30cm of powder on top is something very special! No powder stress, the only competition (but only for local fame) we meet in the pub: Mountain bikers who look at us with at least as much amazement as we look at them. Perhaps also because all my ski mates have a lisp. Ahoy! A day that proves that winter is far from over!
