Exposition
Snow condition
Huge amounts of snow in the upper areas of the Aiguilles Rouges. The amount of snow could also be in mid-April. At altitudes below 2000m, the snow cover is suffering badly due to the southern exposure. Downhill runs are no longer possible
Snow quality
Really unusable off-piste at the moment. Still too hard in the morning and then the snow cover softens very quickly but very irregularly... the sun isn't quite enough to form real firn yet, but the warm temperatures are really affecting the slopes. Braking snow, swamp snow, hard snow and avalanche boulders without end. There's a bit of everything and nothing is good for the bands. Brevent summit north side 2500m also no more powder.
Risks
Wind intensity: Low (< 20 km/h)
Too much warming for touring activities from midday. Lifts closed from early afternoon due to danger of large wet snow slides. A snow slab sighted, time of departure unknown, as well as large cracks to the left and right of it. Some cross directly underneath and stay in the potential cone for a long time.
Avalanche activity
Dry slab avalanche
Altitude: 2200 m
Overall impression
A lot going on at the moment because of the vacations in France. In the afternoon we finally checked out the avalanche cone of les Gaillands that buried half the climbing garden. (photo) You'll never get the routes for free again. Redpoint ascent with touring skins is still pending.
