Snow condition
Very good snow conditions in the Aiguilles Rouges for this time of year. Exit from the Vallon du Berarde possible without stone contact. Crossings of the river are extensively snow-covered.
Snow quality
Late start today so that the south-facing traverse under Pointe Alphonse Favre wasn't too icy. Timing was perfect. Around 12.30 there was still no swamp but slushy enough to descend relaxed. Col du Berard on the east side could only be reached with a creative viewfinder. There is still a good chance of powder snow on over 2500 north-facing and sheltered slopes. In the Vallon dan, there is correspondingly slush and hard but stable Harach cover in the shade.
Risks
Wind intensity: No Wind (0 km/h)
Powerful avalanche on the northern slope on the western side of the Col de Berard. Approx. 3 m thick. (see photos) probably started during or at the end of the massive snowfall 2 weeks ago. At that time, the south-westerly wind was blowing right into these slopes. The spot is treacherous. If nothing had come down there, I would never have suspected such a thick blanket of snow in this place. The slopes next to it are bigger and steeper and nothing came off there.
Overall impression
With good timing you can ski beautiful firn. With a bit of searching, you can also get some powder snow. Good touring conditions at the moment.
