Snow quality
Good powder snow. With yesterday about 40cm. In most expos and slopes without wind influence.
Wind drifted snow
Intensity: medium
Above: 1900 m
Risks
Wind intensity: High (40 – 60 km/h)
Contrasting snow cover. Many places completely without wind in the morning despite strong valley wind from the east in the morning. Turned to southwest in the afternoon at high altitudes. La Herse and Bochard lift north-facing slopes top and without danger signs. Many north-facing slopes were probably so well protected that there was no wind. At the Pendant Lift on the west side and on the ridge edge to the GM area there was a clear wind influence on a small scale, which became stronger as the day progressed (last photo) Above the Pendant Lift the terrain turns to the west side... here the wind was surprisingly fast and strong. So we unfortunately managed to release a board on the 2nd run of the day at around 9:00. Expo north altitude 2000m approx. 33 degrees at the steepest point. Crack height approx. 15-20 cm, the fresh snow underneath came along as sluff. Width approx. 15 m. Run-out into treacherous terrain trap approx. 100 m. It was stupid to be in this terrain today. Luckily I was able to ride out to the side before entering the canyon. A group of 2 people next door triggered a slightly larger board behind a crest almost at the same time and 1 person was swept away, was able to trigger the airbag and free himself. We only found out about this at the bottom. It was a great learning experience for me today. Some mistakes in the decision-making chain that added up in combo with a very local and insidious danger spot. It was the first time since November that there was real wind and fresh drift snow formed rapidly. The LLB didn't say anything about it and although it was so easy to recognize, I was blind to it today and clearly underestimated the thickness and readiness to trigger even in the not so steep terrain.
Avalanche activity
Dry slab avalanche
Altitude: 2000 m
see above.
Overall impression
All in all, a good day with good snow. But the shock of the first avalanche experience, which broke away like clods, is still a bit in the bones. You don't have to have that feeling again so soon.
