Every day it gets more difficult down at the Mer de Glace. Tuesday was still skiable throughout, but today you had to unbuckle in places. Below 2700m the snow cover is suffering particularly badly. More and more debris is coming out on the glacier. Crevasse bridges are usually easy to close, but due to the warming from midday onwards, they should be treated with caution. The last snowfall has created better downhill conditions but has also hidden some cracks in the snow cover.

Firn
Powder snow

On Tuesday it was still powdery on the top few meters, but it settled quickly in the sun. Wednesday no longer quite powdery but good to ski. Below 3000m, even on the north side in the open slopes towards early afternoon. Slightly better snow on the Vallée Noire descent. Overall more fresh snow on the Italian side.

Risks

Crevasse or fall danger
Rockfall danger
Diurnal warming
Much water in the snow cover

Wind intensity: No Wind (0 km/h)

Many new crevasses below the Requin hut. Sometimes you can hear it splashing underneath. Some of the holes are deep and jagged and often inconspicuously hidden behind bumps. The helicopter circled for quite a long time several times today. Once on the north side of Col Entreve and at Salle a Manger. A serac avalanche fell on the traverse to the Requin hut. The steep terrain on the south side is extremely fast and hardly freezes through at night. Beware of falling rocks on the glacier edges, some of which can slide right up to the ski track.

The days are numbered for the Vallée Blanche as a consumer-friendly off-piste descent. The descent is becoming increasingly dangerous, even on the easiest routes, and getting out at the bottom is becoming more and more arduous and material-intensive. Tacul Flank was climbed on the descent. The ascent was aborted shortly before a steep upswing with skis. The line is not trivial at present with several crevasse steps to overcome. Some people on their way to Mont Blanc from the other ascents.

Note on Conditions Reports

The ConditionsReports are user-generated content - from freeriders for freeriders! Recently, a distinction has been made between MiniReport, which offers a quick status report with location, image/video and text, and ProReport, which requires more detailed information and can be uploaded by advanced users.

Every registered user can enter the MiniReport in the WebApp, iOS app or Android app. If you would also like to upload ProReports, please write to us at conditionsreporter@powderguide.com so that we can activate it for you and briefly explain it to you!
