Sass Pordoi - Canale Holzer
Snow condition
Snow quality
Overall impression
Snow condition
Generally very good snow conditions in the region. The snow walls on the road up to the Passo Pordoi are already decent for the time of year and there is already a lot of snow in the Canale Holzer. One section has to be abseiled over 2 rock/ice steps. However, this section will probably only be passable when there is a lot of snow, otherwise you can easily get back to the road coming from the Sella Pass at the bottom of the exit.
Snow quality
Powdery, somewhat settled snow in the gully, slightly wind-pressed in some places. Below approx. 2200m you will notice that the snow becomes a little soggier and below 2000m you are skiing on a thick layer of melted snow.
Risks
On the south side you can see some sliding snow avalanches. Most of the snow has already gone there, and there are still a few unloaded snow mouths to be seen. Due to the fact that it was relatively mild the days before, the snow cover on the north side has already made a settled impression.
Overall impression
Just as Heini Holzer would have liked, the Canale Holzer done by fair means. The gondola on the Sass Pordoi is still closed, so the rush in the whole area is limited :D
Climbed the beautiful, long and steep gully in great conditions :)
The abseil station is very well equipped with 2 connected bolts and a carabiner. We abseiled with two 30m half ropes, a 30m rope is probably a bit too short at the moment.
