Snow report East Tyrol-North Carinthia, 05/31/2018

Snow condition
Bad. Even at very high starting points you have to carry. But you can still descend >1000m and I've just looked at old trips: in average years it looks much better in the area. Especially the difference to last year is stark!
Snow quality
Quite ok, unfortunately the actually great summit slope (east side) was already a bit too soft at 10 am. The best snow was right at the bottom in a nice, shady gully: soft summer firn that was already too slushy. But it's just far too warm... :(
Risks
In some expos it didn't close overnight. On the south and east sides, it is very easy to trigger wet sliding snow slides in steep terrain, which usually slide slowly and rather gently. But it can be enough to tear down in the fall terrain.
Overall impression
Unfortunately very warm, but still a beautiful day in the lonely Schober group.
Some things are still possible without touching the glacier.
Best on the large glaciers in the Tauern core, Venediger & Glockner group.
Remarkably little snow.
