Spring tour in the Niedere Tauern
Snow condition
Snow quality
Overall impression
Snow condition
Still quite decent for the time of year. With skis you can set off from about 1400m.
Snow quality
I had hoped for firn or even some north-facing powder further up, but the day before yesterday it rained all the way up (>2400m). As a result, the snow surface isn't so nice and smooth at the moment, and above 2000m it hasn't really transformed yet, except on steep south-facing slopes. Overall it's quite nice, but will get even better with a few clear nights.
Risks
In principle, typical spring conditions, and there are already some larger avalanches in the valley. However, I would be cautious in the near future with the moisture penetrating even at higher altitudes, or I would be home early.
Overall impression
Quite nice, hope there will be a few more tours with really good firn.
