Snow condition
The Lower Engadine is not generally regarded as a snow hole. This fact is also evident this season. However, there is more than enough snow, but especially after the fresh snowfall from 01.03. to 02.03. real minefields have formed. With a little experience, these can be skied around, but there are still numerous scratches from stone contacts.
Snow quality
I'm inclined to give it 5 stars, but it could always be a bit better! In any case, the fresh snowfall from 01.03. to 02.03. turned the mountains an unbelievably airy and cold white. In some places the snow was a good 30-40 cm deep. In places where there is less, you can sometimes feel the sometimes harsh ground. With the sun's rays, there were lots of damp loose snow slides. The ugly layer of Sahara dust is now barely visible.
Risks
According to the SLF, the snowfall was low, which I can't fully support. The fresh snow started to slide on the hard surface in many places. This was particularly the case on steep, sunny slopes. Overall, the amount of fresh snow was greater than expected. As the fresh snow fell with very little wind influence, no large-scale fractures were observed. In general, however, caution is advised on extremely steep terrain.
Overall impression
Subjectively, I could easily award 5 stars at this point. It was a fantastic day in an equally fantastic environment! Every meter of descent, even down to lower altitudes, was simply awesome this weekend. However, there is still a lack of a more solid base. After a few really good days, I would say that we are in for a fantastic March!
