Winter is back! Freeride tour Piz Minschun N flank and Minschun Pitschen S flank, Lower Engadine
Snow condition

Overall impression
Snow condition
It was the snowfall after Christmas that brought the long-awaited winter to the Lower Engadine. Accordingly, the base is still sparse. The loose fresh snow (20-30cm) from 28.12. covers stones and drift snow that is prone to disruption. Ridges and summits often blown off. Numerous scratches and one fall are due to hidden stones.
Snow quality
Actually perfect! Loose snow, only slightly affected by the wind at the summit.
Risks
Tricky. From the summit of Piz Mischuns, we were able to observe a snow slab of considerable size on a moderately steep NE slope. Rega flew in shortly afterwards. According to media reports, the freeriders concerned were not buried. In general, the problem of old snow on shady slopes still requires a great deal of attention. We were able to observe a few spontaneous snow slabs that came down on the gritty old snow. On south-facing slopes, we estimated the snowpack structure to be somewhat more favorable.
Overall impression
An almost perfect day on which we were able to line up first line after first line! However, it could be a little more "relaxed" for my taste. On the other hand, it was a good exercise to sharpen our senses.
