Variations of snow cover

In general, there is enough snow in the region between the Sioni Valley and the Gudauri ski resort so that there are no restrictions on the choice of routes. However, south-facing slopes are probably only skiable from an altitude of 2600m due to the high temperatures and sunshine.

Snow quality

3 von 5 Sterne
Hard, pressed snow
Wet snow
Powder snow

Very changeable snow quality. Mixed at lower altitudes due to the current warmer temperatures, still very hard in the morning, rather heavy in the afternoon. Higher up, it's very dependent on the terrain, wind and exposure. There's everything between powder, hardpack and compact wind packs

Risks

Abort the tour
Old snow problem
Diurnal warming
Much water in the snow cover
Woom- or hissing noise
South-East South South-West

Wind intensity: Medium (20 – 40 km/h)

Generally very high avalanche danger. In all exposures, spontaneous small to large wet snow avalanches can also trigger slab avalanches at higher altitudes.

A week in Gudauri comes to an end. The problems with the snow cover that led to the cancellation of the FWT are also present on the other side of Georgia. We started with very warm temperatures which unfortunately have hardly decreased. Due to an existing old snow problem, the warmth, the power of the sun and medium gusts, an extremely large number of avalanches occurred here in every exposure. This forced us to get creative with our tour planning. The GPX files of all the steeper routes (or anything >30 degrees) could be deleted in the end. In addition, the precipitation four days ago, which came down as rain up to 2500m, made the overall situation more difficult. With one day of touring with lift support and slightly more relaxed conditions towards the end of the week, we were still able to make a few nice Georgian turns in the relaxed terrain. Unfortunately, however, we had just as many aborted tours on the valley floor as good runs, as a lot of things here would simply be playing with fire. To sum up, we are happy to have been in this breathtaking landscape, which we will now leave with many open projects, as the situation here is unfortunately just as tense as in the Alps at the moment.

Note on Conditions Reports

The ConditionsReports are user-generated content - from freeriders for freeriders! Recently, a distinction has been made between MiniReport, which offers a quick status report with location, image/video and text, and ProReport, which requires more detailed information and can be uploaded by advanced users.

Every registered user can enter the MiniReport in the WebApp, iOS app or Android app. If you would also like to upload ProReports, please write to us at conditionsreporter@powderguide.com so that we can activate it for you and briefly explain it to you!
