Snow condition
The snowfall did a lot for winter cosmetics. The last few centimetres during the night from the 6th to the 7th even fell (almost) without wind/storm (this does not apply to the summit areas or generally particularly exposed areas such as ridges etc.). It was also quite good for skiing in sheltered hollows etc.. However, this came at the cost of occasional winter hiking along the gravel/rocky summer path. Descent on the alpine road into the Jassing up to 1100m possible (some stone contact is unavoidable).
Snow quality
Wind drifted snow
Intensity: no wind
Risks
Wind intensity: Medium (20 – 40 km/h)
Despite heavy storms over the last three days, the amount of drift snow is holding back. The size of individual drift snow lenses on ridges etc. is also manageable. The danger in the Hochschwab area is currently much lower than in the regions with more fresh snow (the LWD has also reduced the danger to level 2 in the high altitudes for today). The tour was aborted on the ridge between Kleine and Große Eibenstein due to storms and fog (the last wisps of fog/clouds only disappeared in the afternoon, even in the summit areas).
Overall impression
The third star is awarded for a couple of beautiful downhill runs, which we were even able to enjoy in sunshine, glistening fresh snow and without wind. Extra points for the hospitable Sonnschienhütte and its tenants.
