Snow report Jungfrau Region, 01/07/2016
Winter is slowly approaching. The base is already there, now all that's missing is the icing on the cake.
Snow condition
Snow quality
Overall impression
Snow condition
Blowing heavily. The ridges are all bare, but the snow in the hollows is meters high. The snow is strongly pressed by the wind. At least this has the advantage that you don't sink in too much and don't touch any stones. Quite ok as a base. Below 1500m there is only a little snow, but no stones either. This means that the valley descents are skiable.
Snow quality
Good is different, but it was easy to ride above 2000m. Underneath there was a crust of broken hardpack. The snow is wind-pressed, but quite nice to ride in sheltered places. Wet snow at the bottom.
Risks
Tricky. Heavy snow drifts. Unfortunately, a medium-sized slab of snow broke loose today. Fortunately without consequences. There were also rumbling noises. Caution is advised.
Overall impression
The snow that is lying now forms a good base. Within this week, the snow conditions at 2000m have improved considerably. The rain is only good for the base. And there are still some fronts in the forecast for next week, to the delight of freeriders, but it will be a challenge for the upcoming Lauberhorn races.
