Snow condition

There is a lot of snow in the mountains for the end of January. At 2000 m it should be around 3 meters. In Grindelwald it was about 1 meter. After the heavy rain of the last few days, there is perhaps 50 cm left, but even that is still a lot. The entire south-facing slopes are also well covered in snow. Very good base.

It rained heavily for a long time until yesterday. In some places it reached well over 2000m, typically in the Bernese Oberland with winds from the west. But overnight the snow line dropped to around 1400m, which massively improved the snow quality at altitude. Below that, everything is now icy. The southern slopes were also softened up to 2000m today and a crust formed. Unfortunately, the week continues to be very mild for the time of year.

Risks

Due to the warm temperatures and the rain, the snow cover has settled considerably and is now frozen and solidified again. This has significantly reduced the risk of avalanches. The situation is certainly different in the high mountains above 2500m. There was about 20cm of fresh snow on the soaked layer today (at 2000m).

A week ago we had a real winter wonderland. This one is taking a break for now. However, the snow conditions are still very good. As soon as precipitation falls again with cooler temperatures, dream conditions should quickly return.
Above 2000m on north-facing slopes, however, conditions remain excellent! Keep an eye on the avalanche risk.

Note on Conditions Reports

The ConditionsReports are user-generated content - from freeriders for freeriders! Recently, a distinction has been made between MiniReport, which offers a quick status report with location, image/video and text, and ProReport, which requires more detailed information and can be uploaded by advanced users.

Every registered user can enter the MiniReport in the WebApp, iOS app or Android app. If you would also like to upload ProReports, please write to us at conditionsreporter@powderguide.com so that we can activate it for you and briefly explain it to you!
