Snow report Jungfrau Region, 03/16/2019
Nice Saturday in the Jungfrau region
Snow condition
Snow quality
Overall impression
Snow condition
Very good snow conditions in the Bernese Oberland. Ok, it's slowly getting less at the bottom, but from 1200 m there's actually continuous snow cover and at 2000 m there's easily 2 m (or more). During the night there was another 20 - 30 cm on top, below 1800 m it rained (see also borrarinaldos report).
Snow quality
The first two hours were still powdery everywhere above 1800 m, then quickly becoming heavier with the sun and often slushy at midday. Overall better than expected.
Risks
Rather unproblematic, as the snow cover underneath is very well consolidated and the fresh snow was able to settle quickly. We were able to observe a spontaneous release in very steep terrain in the afternoon.
Overall impression
Very nice day in Grindelwald, where there is still a surprising amount of snow for the time of year and after the long dry phase (not in the village, where it's almost green, but up there). Powder in the morning, firn at lunchtime, that's how it should be in spring. Unfortunately, due to time problems, the CR is only coming now.
