Start of the season in the Jungfrau Region
Snow condition
Snow quality
Overall impression
Snow condition
Quite acceptable snow depth down to the valley floor. And for the time of year and in view of the last 2 winters, even excellent snow conditions. In addition, a lot of mechanical snowmaking has already been completed. There are also large piles of snow on the valley run. There's a good 50cm on the Kleine Scheidegg. I didn't have any stone contact on the whole descent today. Below 1600m, the snow cover becomes thin. But there is only meadow underneath. The valley descent will probably remain closed for a few more weeks, but it's currently doable without any problems (not groomed). As always at the beginning of the season, the terrain is still uneven and requires caution. However, the strong wind before the last snowfall has already filled in the biggest holes.
Snow quality
The snow has already settled well. The last snowfall was without strong winds, which helped the snow quality. Before that, however, there was a strong storm and it was very mild. Rain up to approx. 2500m above sea level. This allowed the first snow to settle and solidify well.
Risks
Favorable avalanche conditions prevailed in the Jungfrau Region. In addition, the snow line dropped from the initial 2000 to the lowlands, which favored the build-up of snow cover. However, the ground is still barely frozen at lower altitudes.
Overall impression
It's always a great feeling to make the first turns in the powder snow at the start of the season.
This weekend marks the start of the winter season on Kleine Scheidegg. First and Männlichen are therefore perfect for ski tours away from the hustle and bustle for the time being. In general, the touring conditions in the Bernese Oberland are already very good, especially in areas that are not too rocky. With a little caution, you can also ski up to around 800m above sea level. Above 1700 m above sea level, the snow conditions are excellent for the time of year. and more snow is in the forecast.... :-)
