Snow report Jungfrau Region, 12/03/2017

Snow condition

Top start to the season in the Jungfrau Region. The conditions are already better than last winter in February. There are already at least 3 good layers. At 2000m above sea level there is about 80cm of settled snow. In addition, the bumps are already well snowed in and there is hardly any blowing. Nevertheless, caution is the order of the day at this time of year. The terrain must be well read. Below 1600m, the snow cover decreases rapidly. In Dorfen there is about 30cm. The valley descents on the ridge side are still closed but easily doable. The valley run from Kl. Scheidegg is open. A lot of artificial snow has already been produced in the whole area.

Snow quality

The snow is already quite settled. But still of the best quality in all exposures and altitudes, at least up to 2700m (I haven't been above that).

Moderate in all exposures. The conditions are favorable. Reeti was done several times today. However, the rockier Schwarzhorn has not yet been done. The avalanche danger is continuing to decrease and is only likely to increase again with the next snowfall next weekend.

Overall impression

Absolutely brilliant start to the winter. There is now a very good base everywhere. It only gets better with every snowfall. Of course there will be warm and foehn phases again. But if these don't last too long and there's fresh snow again afterwards, it could even be considered positive.
