Snow condition
The snow conditions are very poor. It is virtually impossible to start from the Kaunertal valley (without carrying). In the southern part of the toll road, this depends heavily on the topography and is only partially possible. It is possible to start from the Gepatschhaus or the ski area. In some places there was no closed snow cover up to 3000m and the south, west and east sides are heavily snowed out. The glaciers are also not well covered in snow. After the recent precipitation, however, the situation needs to be reassessed.
Snow quality
During the last snowfall on Saturday, a few centimetres fell at around 1900m above sea level and around 20cm at 3000m. Some of the snow was heavily blown away. There were different types of snow. Wind and melting snow often prevailed at high altitudes. Powder was also still to be found in windless, shady areas. On the lower, sun-exposed slopes, we sometimes encountered the finest firn and slush.
Wind drifted snow
Intensity: medium
Altitude: 2300 m – 3500 m
Risks
Wind intensity: Medium (20 – 40 km/h)
Due to the prevailing old snow problem, the strong wind and the sometimes quite abundant amounts of fresh snow from Saturday, we were a little more cautious. Around the ski area and the Weißseespitze, however, we also skied some steeper sections.
Overall impression
We had great days with the best weather on Sunday and Monday. However, after the current precipitation and snowfall limits, we have to reassess the situation.
The ConditionsReports are user-generated content - from freeriders for freeriders! Recently, a distinction has been made between MiniReport, which offers a quick status report with location, image/video and text, and ProReport, which requires more detailed information and can be uploaded by advanced users.
Every registered user can enter the MiniReport in the WebApp, iOS app or Android app. If you would also like to upload ProReports, please write to us at conditionsreporter@powderguide.com so that we can activate it for you and briefly explain it to you!
