Snow report Kaunertal, 06/11/2017
Saisonabschluss im Kaunertal
Snow condition
Snow quality
Overall impression
Snow condition
Very little snow for mid-June, outside the glaciers (and on the glacier tongues) there is actually no more continuous snow cover even at high altitudes and there is really not much on the glaciers either. It's still enough for skiing, but you're simply not safe from crevasses.
Snow quality
Excellent firn, rarely so good this late in the year. Below about 2900 the suncups start, but then the snow is more or less gone anyway...
Risks
Relaxed. You can see some surprisingly large avalanches (some even with a cracked edge) but they are all older. The daytime warming no longer plays such a big role and the main danger comes from crevasses on the glaciers, which are only very poorly snow-covered.
Overall impression
That was really nice again, but due to the lack of snow outside the glaciers and the high risk of crevasses falling on them, I will probably summer in my touring skis very early this year
