Piste boarding on the Kaunertal Glacier
Snow condition
Snow quality
Overall impression
Snow condition
Away from the piste, it looks quite wintry with around 10 cm of fresh snow. But stones are lurking hungrily to bite into the surface. Even if it looks very tempting in some places, there's really no rational reason to leave the pistes at the moment. I've attached a few photos of the Weißseespitze north face, as well as the Münchner Abfahrt, Gletscherzunge Rauhekopfhütte descent, Wiesjaggel Nord and other interesting gullies. This may be helpful for tour planning during the season (ice retreat, position of crevasses, etc.)
Snow quality
Sunday very fluffy. Monday still quite good. Piste quality excellent down to 2100 m with no loose ice or stones
Risks
The fresh snow was swirled around a bit in the typical saddles and gullies. Otherwise quite unaffected by wind. Below the Weißseespitze there is a lot of wind fishing. Off-piste tours are hardly worthwhile at the moment and require very good knowledge of crevasses and shark hiding places
Overall impression
Perfect start to the season. Better conditions than some years in December. Two more big snowfalls and then you can swap your powder skis for piste skis.
