All-Conditions-Day on the Ellmauer Tor
Snow condition
Snow quality
Overall impression
Snow condition
Good snow conditions. The starting point is at an altitude of 1000m - easily skiable up to this point. Stone contact on blown slopes possible but avoidable. Route selection possible without any problems.
Snow quality
On this tour, you mostly pass south-facing slopes. Therefore very icy surface. The descent is already rutted and partly hard and icy, but from midday it is mostly soft and slushy. A little fluffy powder can still be found in parts of the slopes facing away from the sun. Route choice in terms of slope gradient and time of day is therefore an advantage.
Risks
Moderate risk of sliding snow avalanches due to the sharp rise in temperature as the day progresses. Weak layers of old snow on steep shady slopes and drifting snow slopes.
Overall impression
Started the day with 0 expectations. Icy, crumbly ascent was not much fun. Unfortunately, the sun also let us down. The descent was changeable. But we were rewarded with one or two powder or slush turns thanks to the north-facing slope sections and sunlit slope sections.
