Snow report Kitzbühel Alps, 05/18/2017

Snow condition

A short section after the first steep step must be carried. Approx. 1h. After that it still goes quite well, on the left side orographically lies a little more and will go a little longer without interruption. At the fair weather window, the first stones are already peeking out in the lower part, and there are also a lot of large stones on the snow at the top, which can come down either due to the heat or other winter sports enthusiasts. If there were a lot of people ahead of me, I wouldn't go back up, there are some really big rocks.

Snow quality

I went to Goinger Törl first, but had to turn back when it got steep. It was just too damp already and therefore too tricky for me. Got there at 9 o'clock, won't have been much better at 8. It just didn't radiate enough/ freeze through tonight. The fair weather window was also quite low and I was about to turn around twice. It got a little better at the top. The descent was surprisingly good and there was very little snow sliding down. The snow was still the most compact in the lower part of the tour directly after strapping in. Overall, the soft slush was quite nice to ride. It wasn't lazy and it wasn't rocky either.

As I said, not so easy and already in the morning. I saw two more after me, I hope they didn't go up to the Törl either. All it takes is one turn to slip away and there's so much sliding and more and more that it quickly becomes dangerous. It will take a while until the snow is transformed into summer snow and the whole thing is no longer so mushy. One of us walked up at 11.30, but that's normal here.

Overall impression

You had to carry quite a long time for a soggy tour today. When it's nice and hard, it's certainly still fun. It won't last too much longer, I'm critical of the stones in the fair weather window. And for the foresters among us, I was able to watch an eagle flying in a garland for quite a long time today.
