Tours around the Pengelstein

Snow condition
Our starting point for touring today was the Pengelstein (1938 m). On the north-west side you can ski down to approx. 1550 m, after that it becomes difficult. On the south-east side, we skied down to approx. 1600 m without any problems. The snow situation is very inhomogeneous, on the leeward side there is a base approx. 30 cm thick and thanks to rain during the week the snow is soaked through to the ground. The amount of snow is very manageable in all areas exposed to the wind.
Snow quality
In the north-west exposure, we found heavy and damp snow in sheltered areas. However, it was still solid to ski. As the altitude dropped, the quality changed from turn to turn and the snow became heavier and heavier. Towards midday, the ice pack on the south-east side began to firn up slightly and the downhill conditions there were quite good.
Risks
From very steep sunny exposures, very small wet snow slides were occasionally visible. The snow is soaked through to the ground. The main danger today came from streams and snow-covered obstacles.
Overall impression
The last run in the November firn was convincing and rounded off the day well. After midday, the bad weather front arrived, temperatures dropped and the first flakes could be seen on the mountain. Let's hope for cold temperatures and white gold.
