Skitour ab Baad: wie verbrannter Apfelstrudel
Snow condition
Snow quality
Overall impression
Snow condition
Still and always below average. You can reach the valley without any problems, but there are still stones sticking out that you shouldn't normally see at this time of year. On the sunny slopes, the snow is already getting a little thin in places.
Snow quality
I was out and about at Karlstor and it was just underground. Every step uphill was taken twice: apparently a large part of the slope came down as a wet snow slide, with powder on top. There are lumps of ice in the rock-hard ascent track and ball bearing drift snow in many places. Downhill is actually horror. The wet snow slides and bumps are frozen like ice. Then the whole thing was covered in powder, so you can't see the knee turns. Other slopes looked good from a distance, mine was just crap.
Risks
Over 1800m a 2. I wouldn't have wanted to be stuck in the (older) wet snow slide. On sunny slopes you can sometimes see fish mouths. The powder is partly influenced by the wind. Would say the 2 fits. Overall, however, it's rather difficult to assess this winter.
Overall impression
Actually, I should only give it one star or none at all. If only because I also broke the ski. But because it looks good overall in the area and I'm sure some people have done 3 or even 4-star tours.... But there's already a lot going on in Baad and the main routes look pretty dug up. You can tell that the alternatives are thin on the ground and people are fickle. The whole thing seems like a burnt apple strudel to me: looks pretty good with all that powdered sugar, but is actually inedible.
