Snow report La Grave, 03/27/2018
Nachtrag: La Voute, Trifides, Banane
Snow condition
Snow quality
Overall impression
Snow condition
There is significantly more snow than last season. Despite high temperatures, couloirs such as la Voute can be climbed without any problems and without coming into contact with rocks right up to the road. In the Trifide couloirs, only the traverses are a little rocky and blown away. The Girose glacier is heavily snow-covered and some of the larger crevasses are covered. So you should still take care here.
Snow quality
Humpy, grippy at the top, softened at the bottom but easy to ride. Slippery sections in the forest quite icy. The descent over the Girose glacier is untracked and slightly softened and easy to ski. La Voute is grippy from top to bottom and excellent to ski despite over a week of drought. Le Banane, Colouir du Lac and Patou are moguls like almost everything else. The Trifides is hard and grippy
Risks
Little avalanche activity observed apart from sluff in untracked steep terrain. There is still some snow here. In the afternoon, a few smaller slides from steep, firm terrain above the couloir and wet snow cones on the descent
Overall impression
The high snow conditions and the sheltered location of the Voute make for a very good descent for the time of year. Other variants are also still worthwhile. With the predicted amounts of fresh snow, winter is far from over here.
